Eat, Sleep,and Breathe Books

I really miss the warm weather.

As winter settles in deeper, we hibernate more.
Sundays have become a day to nap, watch TV, or play on the computer.
We rarely leave the house.
If we lived in town, it might be different—but down here in the boonies, there’s nothing to do and nowhere to go.

I’ll admit, it’s only 12 miles (ca. 19 km) one way to hit a mall or a McD’s, but when it’s cold, we don’t particularly like to go out.
It’s bad when even Badger chooses to curl up in bed and just watch TV all day.

I just finished a book called Zomblog. It reminded me a lot of The Walking Dead and Zombieland—really good and hard to put down.
My only regret?
There’s a part two, but you have to pay for it, and I promised Cowboy I wouldn’t waste money on books. Oh, well.

Here’s what I’ve read so far:

  • The Body Farm: This one made me mad. They forgot to mention it was just a teaser—two chapters—and you had to buy the full book to finish it.

  • A Good Clean A Harsh Clean: Extremely short, but good enough.

  • Scary Mary: Technically a teen book, but pretty darn good. See, I taught myself to read at age two. By five, I was reading and understanding Gone With the Wind and other adult books. I never liked kiddie books—wouldn’t touch them. So now that I’m an old lady, I find myself enjoying the ones I skipped way back then.

  • Touching Cotton: The Shty Life of a Dad with IBS: Not worth the time.

  • Zombie Cinderella (Zombie Fairy Tales #1): Part of a series. Good, but very graphic and gruesome.

  • Confessions of a Stay-at-Home Mom: Didn’t finish. No clue what it was supposed to be, but it put me to sleep.

  • Rippers Row: Dang good. Of course, it’s part of a series. Imagine Jack the Ripper as a vampire hunter.

  • Cades Cove: A Novel of Terror: Also part of a series, and really good. It’s partially set in Tennessee, in an area we’ve often gone swimming and picnicking—so I’m partial.

  • Elvis Has Not Left the Building: Another series. Didn’t love it, but the idea was interesting—Elvis gets extensive plastic surgery and becomes a Hollywood private eye.

  • The Prayers of Agnes Sparrow: Pretty good. Not sugary Christian.

  • Charlotte Fig Takes Over Paradise: I liked this one. Found it funny.

  • The Abduction of Mary Rose: Pretty good.

  • Ghost Hunting Diary Volume 1: A little disappointing, but okay.

  • Moon Dance (Vampire for Hire #1): Pretty good. Yep, another series.

I think maybe I read too much—but nothing gets neglected, so I guess it’s okay.

Confession time: When I went into labor with Heron, I was reading a really good book. I was just about to find out who the killer was when my water broke. I knew I had very little time to get to the hospital—my labors are fast. But I waited to see who the killer was before I notified the doctor and Cowboy.

Heron was born one hour after we got to the hospital. It took us nearly an hour to drive there. But I finished the book.

Fast labors run in the family. My grandmother loved to tell the story of my mom’s birth. The only hospital in town was for rich folks, so most people still had babies at home. Granny sent Grandpa to get the doctor, and by the time they got back, Mom was already born. Granny’s Ma delivered her.

Raven was born 15 minutes after I got to the hospital—he crowned in the hallway. I’d already been to the hospital once with false labor and got sent home. So when the real thing hit, Cowboy was on the phone with Bonus Daughter #1 and just kind of pooh-poohed me when I said, “Hey, I think this is it.”

By the time he got off the phone—and we hit 4 p.m. K rush hour traffic—yeah, Cowboy almost had to deliver Raven himself. That kid was not waiting for a room, a nurse, or even a clean towel. He was coming now.

Peacock is the only baby I had with an epidural. I didn’t have time with Raven, and didn’t need one with Heron or Badger. The only medication I had was Pitocin with Peacock, Heron, and Badger. No clue why they insisted on that when they knew once my water broke, that baby would pop out PDQ. Maybe it was because I hemorrhaged with Raven.

Peacock, Heron, and Badger’s births weren’t so dramatic—although the doctor did get really angry with Badger. He already had one woman crowning in the next room, and here I was crowning with Badger. He actually asked me if I couldn’t wait.

Um… are you nuts?

Anyway—totally off-topic there. Way off-topic.

I’m off to hunt for more reading material. Pixel of Ink and EReaderIQ are great for free Kindle books. EReaderToday has some too.
