We bought the boys airsoft rifles for Christmas.
They shoot soft, plastic BBs.
Raven is 14 and Heron is 12.
They've had BB guns since they were barely able to toddle, so we thought it was no big deal.
Cowboy took Peacock out to practice driving, and Heron was with them.
I was in the kitchen washing dishes and had left Raven and Badger watching cartoons.
I heard a blood-curdling scream from Badger, so I ran into the living room.
Raven said he had accidentally shot her in the eye with the airsoft gun.
After that one scream, all she did was stand like a statue, slightly shaking, no emotion at all.
Scared me to death.
I called 911 and Cowboy.
The decision was made to take her by ambulance to Knoxville.
Cowboy met the ambulance en route to Knoxville.
Originally we were heading to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital, but they communicated with the ambulance that we needed to go to The University of Tennessee Medical Center.
It is a trauma hospital and had a pediatric eye surgeon on standby.
Long story short, thank heavens it was an airsoft BB gun with plastic pellets.
The pellet actually bounced off her pupil.
Her pupil right now is the shape of a football, but if it had been a metal pellet it would have been an entirely different story.
She's OK.
We have eye drops to put in and a lot of doctor appointments ahead of us just to be on the safe side.
They say that she is now more at risk for glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration due to the trauma.
We need to make sure we have yearly eye exams.
The police did come by.
They agreed it was an accident, and I guess that is that.
The new rule is that BB guns are kept outside and unloaded.
