"Stars, Stripes, and Freedom—Happy July 4!"

The Unfinished Promise

They signed their names
with ink and hope,
never knowing who we'd be.
They could not see
our triumphs,
our failures,
our endless becoming.
They gave us not a perfect nation,
but the chance to build one.

Then came those
who carried that promise forward—
on battlefields,
across oceans,
through sacrifice beyond measure.
Some came home.
Many did not.
Their names are etched
in stone,
in memory,
and in every freedom
we too often take for granted.

Brick by brick.
Voice by voice.
Generation after generation.

And woven into that story
are immigrants who came
with courage and hope of freedom,
adding their work
to the unfinished nation,
and became part of the same “we,”
held together by the same unfinished promise,
a nation still becoming itself,
a nation of many colors, many faiths, many peoples, equal in one shared belonging.

The Fourth of July
is more than history.
It is a promise renewed.
To guard liberty.
To defend truth.
To keep democracy alive.
To leave this nation stronger
than we found it.

The Founding Fathers
lit the first flame.
Countless others
gave their tomorrows
so we could live our todays.

Now the flame is ours.

So let the bells ring.
Let the children laugh.
Let the flag fly high
against the summer sky.

And above the thunder
of fireworks,
above every voice
raised in gratitude,
let freedom ring!
