Even though my nest is empty, some motherly instinct told me one of my little birds was awake.
I got up at 8, came into the living room, and sat with her.
I think she would have preferred to be alone, but space is tight in this house.
With Cowboy asleep and Raven having taken over the spare bedroom, I had nowhere else to go.
In warm weather I can escape to the she‑shed, although this year it’s going to be tough getting in.
It has been turned into storage out of necessity.
She was a bit crabby, which has been more common lately.
The living room didn’t last long.
She got mad and headed back to her bedroom.
So, Smudge has dental problems, and about every six months or so she’ll start bleeding from the mouth.
We’ve been handling this just fine, but this time Badger became very upset and said she cannot handle it.
Okay, it is gross, but we’ve always managed it.
She wanted me to find a rescue to take the cat.
Which I did, sort of.
The rescue laid it out plain: a feline leukemia–positive cat would be euthanized in a shelter.
She couldn’t take the cat, and she didn’t know of any rescue that would take one like her.
However, she did know of a medication that may help with the constant bleeding.
The problem is that it runs from $800 to $1,000.
She agreed to run a fundraiser if I’ll give Smudge the pills.
Badger was not happy about it, and Smudge does not take pills well, I will say that.
So I asked Heron, and he said if I got them, he’d show me how to give them to her.
When we adopted Smudge, we did not know her health conditions, but we agreed to take her for her lifetime, not throw her out when she got bad.
I plan on honoring that agreement.
The day moved along as days do.
Time for Cowboy to go to work came and went.
I was on the computer most of the day, still organizing image files in between loads of bedding.
Today was my wash‑bedding day.
Raven came in from work wanting the washer, and I told him to set his clothes in the hall and I’d get them when I was finished.
Someone is always wanting something when someone else needs it washer, bathroom, kitchen, something.
I did get his clothes washed eventually, but I finished up my bedding first.
Sometimes Jane has things she wants done.
Badger finally came out of her room at 6 p.m., and we had a light supper.
She tells me I eat like a divorced kid who never learned to cook.
Well, I hate to break it to her, but that’s pretty much true.
Tonight it was just leftover cold biscuits and syrup.
We watched a little TV, but Badger was in bed by 9 p.m.
We do have an early morning doctor appointment, so I’ll be heading to bed too.
